Records, 1858-1992 (bulk 1920-1992).

The collection contains the historical files, publications, and records of the public relations, sales, and personnel departments of L.S. Ayres' downtown store from 1872-1991. Included are company histories; newsletters; training materials for personnel; advertising and merchandising materials; and stockholder information. Also included are executive records, especially those of Lyman S. Ayres I and II and Frank Ceravolo. Of special interest are materials on the Ayres Historical Costume collection; the Indianapolis homefront during World Wars I and II and employee war letters; and the Lincoln Square (now Merchants Plaza) and Indianapolis Hilton Hotel project. Photographs are stored in Visual Collections.

Lyman S. Ayres was born in New York state and began his business career there as a peddler and later partner in a dry goods firm. In 1872 he became a partner in the Trade Palace in Indianapolis, but remained in New York. In 1874 he took full ownership of the store, and moved to Indianapolis in 1875. Indianapolis department store chain that began in 1872 when Lyman S. Ayres of Geneva, N.Y. purchased controlling interest in the Trade Palace, an Indianapolis dry and fancy goods store. The flagship store was built at 1-15 West Washington St. in 1905. Suburban mall stores were opened in the 1950s-1990s in Indianapolis and other Indiana cities.
